Minimum Bandwidth Dropping: A Packet Dropping Mechanism for Multimedia Traffic in the Internet
نویسنده
چکیده
Recently, several new packet dropping mechanisms have been proposed for the Internet routers to achieve fair bandwidth allocation among the adaptive TCP applications and the emerging constant bit rate (CBR) multimedia applications which do not adapt their traffic rates. However, these mechanisms lead to waste of router bandwidth which in turn reduces throughput of contending TCP applications, when the allocated bandwidth to a given CBR application is below the minimum bandwidth required for any meaningful communication. In this paper, we propose a packet dropping mechanism, which aims to reduce or eliminate bandwidth waste in the routers by dropping all incoming packets from a CBR application as long as the fair share is below the minimum bandwidth required for that application. By analyzing a reference network configuration, it is illustrated that the proposed mechanism can significantly improve TCP throughput by reducing or eliminating bandwidth waste in the routers due to transmission of meaningless packets from CBR applications.

Over two decades, a problem of location dependent has been focused for improving the communication Bandwidth-Power Efficiency of homogeneous networks. The efficiencies of communication links are weakened by the Hidden Terminal Problem. Thus we propose a Fine – Tune Strategy for analyzing the On-Off communication region. We were observed that the proposed technique had been able to track and mo...

During network congestion, Internet routers discard or accept packets without any regard to the impact the discarded packets might have on the applications or the level of usefulness accepted packets might bring to the applications. Such indiscriminate packet discarding leads to less than desirable performance for the network and the network applications, especially when both multimedia and dat...
متن کاملCHOKe A stateless mechanism for providing Quality of Service in the Internet
We investigate the problem of providing a fair bandwidth allocation to each of flows that share the outgoing link of a congested router. The buffer at the outgoing link is a simple FIFO, shared by packets belonging to the flows. We devise a simple packet dropping scheme, called CHOKe, that discriminates against the flows which submit more packets/sec than is allowed by their fair share. By doin...

Many mechanisms based on bandwidth reservation and handoff mechanism is proposed in the literature to decrease the connection dropping probability for handoffs in mobile 4G communications. The handoff events occur at higher rate in packet-switched fourth generation mobile communication networks than in traditional cellular systems. Hence, an efficient bandwidth reservation mechanism for the nei...
